Get the Windows download and unzip it anywhere, for example on your desktop.
Double-click Clair Launcher.exe. It installs Minecraft, Fabric and Clair for you.
Sign in with your Microsoft account and play. In game, Right Shift opens the Clair menu.

Yes. The launcher, all 35 mods and every wing and cape are free. There's no shop and nothing to unlock.
Clair only has visual and quality-of-life features, the same kind other popular clients offer. It doesn't give you a gameplay advantage. Still, every server has its own rules, so check them if you're unsure.
Other players who use Clair, when you're within 32 blocks of each other. Players without Clair see your normal skin.
With your Microsoft account, through Microsoft's own sign-in. Clair never sees your password.
No. The launcher brings its own Java, and the game uses the Java runtime Mojang provides.
